Program Description:
This session will provide a basic overview of the rules and requirements associated with different fundraising activities. Arm yourself with the issue-spotting ability to help avoid problems down the road. Topics include charitable solicitation registration, required IRS acknowledgments, gaming laws, volunteer fundraising, unrelated business income, crowdfunding, and commercial co-ventures.

About the Speaker:

Barkha Patel is Director of Education and Senior Counsel at Pro Bono Partnership of Ohio, an organization that provides business and transactional legal services to nonprofits serving the disadvantaged or enhancing the quality of life in neighborhoods in Cincinnati and Dayton. She educates nonprofit board members, attorneys, and executive staff about nonprofit-specific legal issues.

Barkha also provides direct legal services to nonprofit organizations, focusing on nonprofit, tax-exempt, and corporate governance matters. And, she serves as a resource for in-house and law firm attorney volunteers and nonprofit clients.

Prior to joining PBPO, Barkha was an attorney in private practice. Barkha received her B.A. in foreign affairs from the University of Virginia, her J.D. from George Mason University, and her M.B.A. from Xavier University. She is admitted to the bar in Ohio and Virginia. She is also a member of the Cincinnati Bar Association’s Nonprofit Law Practice Group, and a Cincinnati Academy of Leadership for Lawyers (CALL) class graduate.
