Job Description and Relationships

The Director, Donor Services (DDS) leads the Foundation’s team that ensures donor partners receive the best-in-class service and partnership from GCF. They are responsible for a talented team of philanthropic advisors as well as the systems and processes to support our donors. In managing the Foundation’s overall program of donor stewardship and cultivation, the DDS is data-driven and process oriented, ensuring the work is coordinated, consistent and continuously improved. In addition, the DDS serves as a philanthropic advisor and mentor to the team of philanthropic advisors.

The DDS works under the direct leadership of the Vice President, Philanthropy, as part of the larger Philanthropic Partnerships group. The DDS works closely with the Finance & Administration and Technology Groups to ensure the efficient and donor-focused treatment of all gifts, gift acknowledgments and establishment of new funds. They are a key collaborator across the organization to ensure an high quality donor experience.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Planning, Organization and Management (70%)

  • In collaboration with the VP, Philanthropy, develop and oversee the program of donor cultivation and stewardship, ensuring consistent and nuanced experiences are delivering the GCF Difference of impact, service and flexibility.
  • Lead and manage a talented team of five philanthropic advisors, ensuring team is trained to employ best-in-class services.
  • Develop, maintain and champion systems and processes to manage GCF’s work with donors; including new donor welcome process, donor portal (Giving Connection), SalesForce, and prospecting.
  • Triage any fund issues in collaboration with leadership.
  • Manage assignments of funds/donors with philanthropic advisors.
  • Leverage data to identify trends, drive decisions and measure outcomes.
  • Identify ways to add value to donors’ relationships with GCF with a goal to engage them in giving partnerships; oversee and inspire the team’s activities to continue cultivation, solicitation and closure of current and planned gift donors.
  • Participate in the development of new products for GCF’s donors; be constantly looking for opportunities to improve existing services and develop new ones.

Relationship Management and Cultivation (25%)

  • Take primary and proactive responsibility for developing, cultivating, and sustaining relationships with donors, prospects and professional advisors using the moves management process.  Offer charitable solutions and assist them in meeting their charitable goals and needs by providing information about GCF’s services, community insights and charitable investment opportunities, benefits of current and planned gifts, etc.  Provide exemplary customer service.
  • Actively participate in and support GCF’s Generous Together efforts, including donor co-investments, impact investments, and volunteer opportunities.  Develop mechanisms for sharing the Foundation’s community knowledge to donors, both systematically and upon request.
  • Serve as primary contact for nonprofit funds.
  • Solicit support for the Foundation’s initiatives including operating funds, as we well as flexible and legacy dollars for the Foundation’s grantmaking initiatives.

Administrative (5%)

  • Compile key performance indicators for respective areas of responsibility.
  • Represent the Foundation at special events, at times in the evening.
  • Maintain the integrity of a portfolio of records and files related to constituents and funds, adhering to organizational data, process and retention standards.
  • Serve as backup to other relationship managers.
  • Earn the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP)® designation from the American College, if not already credentialed.
  • Other assignments and special projects as assigned by the VP, Philanthropy, and/or Chief Philanthropy Officer.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and five plus years’ experience in the asset development field, including substantial work and success in soliciting major and planned gifts; strong managerial track record.
  • Preferred education and experience: Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy and/or Masters degree in accounting, business, finance, nonprofit management or public administration combined with continuing education in fundraising strategies relevant to community foundations; knowledge/experience with community foundations.
  • Commitment to participating fully in GCF’s internal and external racial equity initiatives, demonstrated by thoughtful action, a results orientation and continuous learning.
  • Highly motivated, action-oriented self-starter with strong organizational skills, especially planning and coordination. Ability to work under tight deadlines and to manage workload independently. Willing to adjust to multiple demands.
  • Curious and self-motivated learner interested in understanding the nuances of fundraising, donor engagement and the role of community foundations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; comfort in connecting to diverse constituents and the ability to build authentic, long-term relationships for an organization.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills, including public speaking experience.
  • Proven ability to work as a team player with diverse groups of people and a wide range of personalities.
  • Strong analytic, problem solving and planning skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with database management and office productivity software such as Microsoft Office; experience with SalesForce a plus.
